        <title>Superfluid and string theory?</title>

        <description><![CDATA[<font size="4">There is a low temperture group in Lancaster group, where there is a tradition of using superfluid to study the phase transition features which shared by early universe. The newest issue of Nature Physics reports the result of topological defects generated in phase boundary between A and B phases of superfluid He3. It is claimed that the feature is shared by brane collision problem in string theory.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
It is not at all new that ideas in condensed matter physics are also important in other areas such as high energy physics.&nbsp;A well known example is spontaneous symmetry breaking.&nbsp; The condensed matter experiments can support the general ideas, which may also be relevant to other physics. But condensed matter experiments cannot test the&nbsp;applicability of the ideas in other areas. For example, although spontaneous symmetry breaking&nbsp;had been&nbsp;well established in condensed matter physics, electroweak theory had waited to be, and&nbsp;finally was,&nbsp;tested by high energy experiments. Higgs particle is still waiting to be found.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
In my opinion, the Lancaster experiment on superfluid provides some insights to brane collision, but it is by no means a test of string theory itself.</font>...

        <description><![CDATA[几天前，施士元先生去世。<br />
<br />
中国引进西方科学，主要始于上世纪上半叶。三十年代时已有一定规模，有不少官费留学机会。当时的清华大学优秀毕业生施士元通过江苏省官费留学去了法国，并选择了居里夫人为博士导师。学成归国成为中央大学物理系系主任、教授。施士元先生的博士论文工作是优秀的，回国后为中央大学或后来的南京大学的物理学科建设、人才培养做出巨大贡献。<br />
<br />
作为中国和当时西方物理学最高水平的接触点之一，以及他的贡献，施士元先生做个院士是足够格的。事实上他不是院士。原因据说比较复杂。也许和他的某理论弄得影响自己名声有关。如果确是如此，这是不公平的。<br />
<br />
学术上即使有不被人们接受的东西，也丝毫不会影响其他正确的贡献。海森堡晚年就有个极其荒谬的大统一理论，so what。<br />
<br />
上月在南京参加中国物理学会秋季会议时，还参加了施先生的回忆录首发式。<br />
<br />
我和这位前辈从来没有交往过。二十年前在南大读书时，有一次一个报告会时，进来个不认识的老先生，也不知是不是他。...

        <title>50 years: parity and BCS （费曼的两个懊恼）</title>

        <description><![CDATA[<p><font size="4">五十年前的今天，弱相互作用宇称不守恒已经敲定，半个月内就会宣布杨先生李先生的诺贝尔奖。这是宇宙的一个Law。发现一个Law是一个理论物理学家的最高境界。一般的理论物理学家只能用确知的Law解释一些现象，做一些作业。杰出者可以揭示些以前没注意的联系，加深认识，或方便计算。伟大如Feynman者的最大成就大概是路径积分，获诺贝尔奖是因为重整化。但是他本人最自豪的是弱相互作用的VA理论（这实际上是一个Law)，虽然他只是几个发现者之一。当然，他也曾为没有作出宇称不守恒而有些许懊恼。&nbsp;<br />
<br />
费曼还有另外一个懊恼，那就是他没有能解开超导之谜，虽然他对超流有重要贡献，然后又花了很多精力在超导上。五十年前的今天，划时代的BCS超导理论已经发表。这是一个理论，但是它阐述了世界的一个Law。首先它解释了超导。但它也是关于量子多粒子系统的一个普适的Law。和Maxwell方程的层次不一样，这是一个由Maxwell方程表述的多粒子系统在新的层次上的emergent&nbsp; 的Law.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br />
<br />
BCS理论直接导致了自发规范对称破缺的发现，或者说是后者的一个例子。规范对称性加上它的自发破缺就是粒子物理标准模型的基本思想。<br />

BCS超导理论的创立，标志着量子场论在凝聚态物理中的成功，也标志着凝聚态多体物理和粒子物理的相通。Cooper 之所以成为BCS的C, 就是因为Bardeen请杨先生推荐一个场论专家去合作。众所周知，Bardeen, Cooper, Schrieffer得到了诺贝尔奖。而将BCS的思想推广到粒子物理、提出自发规范对称破缺的几位物理学家（如Nambu,Goldstone, Higgs等），估计将来也会得奖。也许就在半个月内。<br />

如果欧洲核子中心的LHC（大强子碰撞机）找到Higgs粒子，就相当于发现超导的Meissner效应。<br />
<br />
在Urbana, BCS当年工作时的办公楼已经不存在。但下个月世界上相关方面的顶尖物理学家依然将在Urbana集会，纪念五十年的辉煌。<br />

        <description><![CDATA[<p>The recent issue of Nature magzine published a couple of commentary ariticles about Many-World interpretation of quantum theory, which was put forward 50 years ago by a Princeton PhD student&nbsp;named&nbsp;Everett. More technical and less fancy name of this approach&nbsp;is `relative state theory'. &nbsp;Fairly speaking, I think this is one of the best interpretations of QM so far. It provides a consistent, fully unitary, and probably `fully quantum'&nbsp;&nbsp;framework of understanding QM, especially when incorporating the idea of decoherence.&nbsp;&nbsp;I remember that when I first took the quantum mechanics course as an undergraduate, I had some <font size="4">preliminary</font> idea of how to understand QM, which is quite similar to the idea of the `relative state theory'.&nbsp;<br />
